Chocolate Tart: A Delicious Journey from Aristocratic Luxury to Gluten-Free Indulgence
Did you know that chocolate tart made its first appearance in France in the early 19th century? During this time, chocolate was still a luxury product reserved for the aristocracy, but its use in desserts began to spread thanks to culinary innovations of the era. The Chocolate Tart, with its indulgent combination of crispy crust and chocolate filling, quickly became popular in elegant circles of French society.
One of the earliest documented mentions of chocolate tart dates back to 1828, in a French cookbook titled “Le Cuisinier Royal” written by Antoine Beauvilliers, a famous chef of the time. Since then, the chocolate tart has become a timeless classic of French pastry, enjoyed worldwide for its exquisite taste and chocolate indulgence.
This anecdote illustrates the long history and cultural impact of chocolate tart, which continues to delight the taste buds of chocolate lovers around the world to this day. So now let’s go to a very modern version of the Vegan Chocolate Tart, a Guaranteed Treat!
Ingredients:
For the crust of our Vegan Chocolate Tart:
- 1 3/4 cups of crushed chocolate biscuits (about 200 g)
- 6 tablespoons of melted butter (about 80 g)
Or there is another version of the crust using the same one as the one from the Tarte Tatin ( I confess this is my favorite version, but it will give you a little bit more work 😉
For the chocolate filling:
- 1 cup of dark chocolate chips (about 200 g)
- 1 1/4 cups of plant-based milk (such as almond or soy) (about 300 ml)
- 1/4 cup of sugar (about 50 g)
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (about 30 g)
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
Instructions:
- Prepare the crust:
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Crush the chocolate biscuits into fine crumbs using a food processor or by placing them in a plastic bag and crushing them with a rolling pin.
- Mix the biscuit crumbs with melted butter until well combined.
- Press the mixture into the bottom and sides of a greased tart pan. Use the back of a spoon to firmly pack the crust.
- Bake for 10 minutes, then allow to cool. Cooking the crust is optional, so if you don’t have an oven, you could still prepare this egg-Free chocolate tart delight!
- Make the chocolate filling:
- In a saucepan, heat the plant-based milk over medium heat.
- Meanwhile, chop the dark chocolate into small pieces and place them in a heatproof bowl.
- Once the milk begins to simmer, remove it from the heat and pour it over the chopped chocolate. Let it sit for a few minutes, then stir gently until the chocolate is completely melted, and the mixture is smooth.
- In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a little water to form a smooth paste.
- Add the sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and cornstarch paste to the melted chocolate mixture. Return the saucepan to medium heat and continue stirring until the filling thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and pour the chocolate filling into the cooled tart crust. Use a spatula to smooth the top.
- Allow the tart to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until the filling is set.
- Serve:
- Before serving, you can dust the tart with cocoa powder, chocolate shavings for garnish or some berries.
- Slice and enjoy your decadent Vegan Chocolate Tart!
